Encouraging employers to send their teams home to work has been the first line of defence in limiting the spread of COVID19. Metropolitan CBDs have become increasingly empty and its never been easier to get a seat on public transport.  

But just how many office workers are WFH? 

Using multiple datasets and by comparing weekly data over the past month - DSpark extracted and analysed the movement patterns of people who frequent CBD and work oriented locations across all capital cities to accurately establish the true footprint of how many Australian’s are working from home.

Transport: Macquarie Park Catchment

Smart Transport (Mobility as a Service): Macquarie Park Catchment

DSpark is able to analyse the whole journey – first mile & last mile, origins and destinations as well as multimodal travel behaviour across any given trip.

As an example, DSpark analysis shows that areas of similar distance to Macquarie Park train station result in different travel times depending on surrounding transport infrastructure and walking paths to train stations feeding into the Macquarie Park commute.

A major thoroughfare and connecting street for pedestrians, public transport and drivers alike, the corner of Grenfell and Rundell St in Adelaide is also a key route into retail, entertainment and leisure precincts. DSpark provided analysis to better understand movement through this key corridor and how access and usage of the area could be improved.

To better tailor infrastructure across the city DSpark worked with City of Melbourne to provide analysis on pedestrian movements across the Melbourne CBD. Findings showed that congestion varied across multiple precincts, time of day and in proximity to public transport. As curbside use becomes more multi-faceted, mobility data plays a vital role in determining use of curb by time of day, - factoring in crowd congestion, infrastructure availability, public safety and most efficient placement based on concentration of users.

This analysis shows changes in pedestrian activity during two distinct time period. Melbourne CBD is congested during lunchtime,but shows activity in distinct entertainment areas during the evening.

Using mobility data, this visualisation highlights the volume of pedestrians across Melbourne CBD over 24 hour period. This analysis can identify congestion in specific areas by time of day.
